| Q: Can I use my FRS radios on land
and water?
A: Yes! However, keep in mind that the FRS is not
a substitute for the Marine VHF radio service. US
Coast Guard is not monitoring the FRS frequencies.
Q: Are there any usage charges for FRS radios?
A: No! The FRS radios are not cell phones. The only
expenses incurred while using FRS radios are the
actual purchase of the units, and purchases of replacement
batteries if AA alkalines are used. Icom FRS radio,
the IC-4008A, has a rechargeable battery as an option
which would eliminate the battery replacement expenses.
Q: Do I need a license to use an FRS radio?
A: No! Use of the FRS radios in the United States
does not require licensing.
Q: The Icom IC-4008A I own seems to be stuck
in transmit!
A: The IC-4008A has a one touch PTT feature
which, when activated, causes the radio to start
and keep transmitting at the single touch of the
PTT button, even after the button has been released.
The unit will keep transmitting until the PTT (Push
To Talk) switch is depressed again. This feature
is normally off until activated by the operator.
Q: My Icom IC-4008A has stopped responding to
the key presses! There is also a key symbol present
on the display.
A: You may have inadvertently activated the key
lock feature which is used to prevent unwanted
key presses. Turn the radio off, then push and
hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds (extra
long) to turn the unit back on and clear the key
lock feature. You have to hold the Power button
for 1-2 seconds AFTER the radio turns back on,
or the key lock will not disengage.
