Land Mobile Radios Frequently Asked Questions.
Q: Can I use my Icom mobile radio in a vehicle with a 24 Volt electrical system?

A: ONLY if you purchase a separate power converter that will convert 24 Volt DC into 12 Volt DC. All Icom mobile radios are designed to operate with 12 V power systems. Connecting them to 24 Volts will result in immediate failure of the radio due to over voltage. It may even damage the radios beyond repair.

Q: Can I operate my Icom IC-F3/F3S or IC-F4/F4S portable directly from a 12V power source?

A: No. These radios are designed for 9.6 Volt operation only, and should only be powered from the supplied battery packs. The IC-F3/F3S and the IC-F4/F4S have a 12 Volt power connector, but it is used to charge the battery pack. Unit cannot be powered solely through this charging connector.

Q: The keypad on my Icom IC-F3 or IC-F4 portable is not responding, but the radio is receiving and transmitting fine. There is also a key symbol on the display.

A: You've inadvertently activated the key lock function. It is used to lock the radio and prevent unwanted input from the keypad. Key lock function can be assigned to any programmable front panel key. Factory default is key P0. Try pushing and holding P0 for 1-2 seconds to deactivate key lock.

Q: I've obtained some Icom land mobile radios, and I'd like to have them programmed (for Amateur radio, etc.) I'm not an Icom authorized land mobile dealer.

A: Land mobile service is very different from the Amateur radio. It requires that businesses or individuals using the service are licensed for specific frequencies they will be using. The Icom land mobile programming software and necessary cables/other hardware are not available to the general public. Icom authorized land mobile dealers are responsible for FCC licensing, sales and programming of Icom radios used in the land mobile service.
